Video : 3d Printing - What Can Taulman T-Glase And A E3d Volcano 1.2mm Nozzle Do?

So you might have seen the whole hoopla about printing with glass, as was talked about here, and even then I mention that the large ribbons of glass and the beautiful flow reminded me of printing with the E3d's Volcano and using the larger nozzles.  Well seems that I wasn't singular in my thoughts.  

Tom Martz has up over on his youtube channel, which you should head over to and subscribe/follow, has a similar mesmerizing video of Taulmans T-Glase clear printing a similar object as the one printed in glass by MIT.  Only difference here is that the T-Glase clear is molten its significantly "cooler" than the glass so doesn't have that honey warmth glow that molten glass does.  

The results are very similar and being that T-Glase is a bit more durable and practical in its uses for various applications that glass wouldn't be even thought of, e.g., areas where breakage could occur, or the weight of the glass impractical, etc.  T-Glase shines, quite literally!

3D Print & Video : Multi Scoops! (5hrs @ 200 microns)

Check the quick video after the jump of the multiple scoops print almost complete.  This was on a Makerbot Replicator2x. The scoops are printed in 3d2Print.net translucent ABS filament, 5hrs print time @ 200 microns, 228c print head 90c heated print bed, 2 shells with 5% infill, other settings are default makerware.

Video - Don't worry, it's just ESD! (Electrostatic Discharge)

This is a pretty humorous video about electrostatic discharge.  ESD can be very hazardous to your electronics, and you should always wear a grounding bracelet or other such device.  Of course you always don't have this around and you should always ground yourself when handling electronic components   I typically hit my power supply or a piece of metal on my desk that is grounded to expel any static build up.

Watch now as Mehdi Sadaghdar shows us, in a funny way, why ESD is something to watch out for! Hehe.

Video : Unique Interfaces For Electronic Devices Using Magnets!

I came across this video by Andrea Bianchi and Ian Oakley on the youtube channel alsoplantsfly.  The video below covers the idea of using real world objects with magnets in them and the magnetometers in most tablets and cell phone devices.  I'm always a sucker for magnets!

In the video Andrea goes about showing you that with some simple rare earth magnets you can create some pretty interesting interaction and interfaces to do practically anything.  Its looks very similar to how Microsoft's surface identifies items when placed upon it, except I believe in the surfaces examples its using RFID tags.

Where I see these types of interfaces being a real boon is in gaming of course! You could have a 10" tablet or larger device on top of or embedded into a table and use gaming tokens to play various board games or rpgs.  Just like with the RFID examples in the surface demos but you could also recognize them "off the board" (or more on the side) of the board as well!  Ideas are just flooding my brain right now where this could be useful.  Very cool.

Video : What Is Open Source Hardware?

What is Open Source Hardware? There has been much conversation over the definition, use of, and the meaning behind that phrase.  Some in the community such as Josef Prusa, creator of the highly popular and widely used 3d printer the Prusa Mendel, have criticized other members, Makerbot.com, in the community over their definition or interpretation of "Open Source Hardware".

This prompted for the creation of the youtube channel OpenSourceHardware by the Open Source Hardware Association and below is their first video of what Open Source Hardware is defined as.  

The OSHWA even go back to the creation of the bicycle as an example of how Open Source Hardware can help everyone and the benefits of why you too should go Open Source!

Video : CEO of MakerBot Bre Pettis At The OHS!

So the release of the newest 3d printer from MakerBot Industries, the MakerBot Replicator MK2, created a brouhaha across the maker community with both detractors. Ok, quite a few detractors such as Josef Prusa Creator Of Prusa Mendel 3d Printer and Zachary Smith co-founder of MakerBot Industries, for starters , but a few kind of supporters such as Adafruit Industries.   There was/is even a revolt on thingaverse, the website where you can download "things" to print out on any 3d printer, which turns out was over the TOS.

Everyone was unsure of what it all meant and Bre tried to explain their position as best he could in a couple of blog posts, Here and Here, but never really did explain the issue people had with the replicator 2. Even in the comments when people were asking him directly again the question of open vs closed Bre stated 

"Folks really want a black or white answer, but in my experience, it just doesn’t work that way when combining open source, hardware, and business. There is an open hardware definition, but it’s a far throw from a business model."

So skip to the Open Hardware Summit, which Bre gave the keynote last year, and was scheduled to talk this year.  It was much anticipated on what he would talk about, would he try and explain further the position of open vs closed hardware that the Makerbot Replicator2 has taken, or would he speak about something entirely off the wall and non makerbot related?   Well here is the talk and I'll let you find out what Bre ends up discussing.  Be sure to watch the other parts of the talk in case you're interested in the OSH community.

Makerbot TV S02E09 - Finishing Techniques

I haven't been following Makerbot Tv this season. I did come across an episode that answers the one question, that every maker of 3d printed objects has asked at some point.  How do I finish the objects that come out of 3d printers.  Here is the Makerbot crew explaining how they finish some of their projects.


I've heard of various other finishing techniques such as solvent dips, and other filler types where you more or less, as shown in the video, fill in the ridges to an even level using various compounds, such as clay, or automotive filler.  Then finished with a gloss protective coating.


Typically once you've created this "master model" a "master mold" is made out of silcone rubber and plaster and then copies are made out of various other materials.

Makerbot TV S02E01 - A History Lesson

Looks like Season 2 of Makerbot TV is up and running.  Bre Pettis gives us a brief history lesson on the history of the how the makerbot came to be, as well as a small insight into the founding of Makerbot Industries.  


Again, i'm not sure if I'm going to follow every episode, but if a video is interesting I'll be sure to post it here.  I've detailed on previous posts, about the series and what I would like to see on Makerbot TV, hint, PROJECTS! PROJECTS! PROJECTS!  Well see if they decide to give us more substance this time around.

Video - Makerbot Replicator On Al Jazeera English!

Over at the Al Jazeera English they have a great 38 min video about the maker and open source movement around the world as well as interviews with both Dale Dougherty founder of Make Magazine and Bre Pettis one of the founders of Makerbot Industries.  


It's a great piece about how others are using the technology of 3D printing, and they even do a in studio print using a Makerbot Replicator!

Minestation - A Weather Station For Your Minecraft World

What do you get when you combine an Arduino shield and a love for the video game Minecraft? How about an awesome electronics build that will tell you how the weather is topside in your blocky world while you toil away in the depths of your elaborate labyrinth of mineshafts.  Its not often that a few of my hobbies overlap, unless its photography, as that tends to work its way into most everything I do, but this is pure genius.  


Over on the website www.radikaldesig.com (its in Spanish, and thanks to Google translate) they have the files for recreating your own, or you can eventually pick up one up once they get past the pre-alpha phase at minestation.me
